Reminiscence (2005) «Reminiscence» is a Choreographical Act in a Divided Landscape.
«Reminiscence» reflects my experiences and perceptions as a witness of terrorist activities in the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict between 2001 and 2004. I dealt with the absurdity of the situation by applying choreographic means to staged landscapes. My main focus was on the so-called safety fence, on the wall, on isolation, depression, and the loss of respect for humanity. Including photography, film and drawing, Reminiscence is the staged representation of this subject-matter.

Aurore Reinicke – on the photography series REMINISCENCE, 120 x 180 cm (47” x 71”), 2005

Conceived in response to a terror attack that I witnessed in the Middle East, “Reminiscence” should be viewed as a reflection on inner life and subjectivity.

The absurdity of a hidden war and of crisis is presented using choreographic means and a landscape that is both semi-real and also artificially staged.

A body in movement, both mobile and immobile, depersonalized and subsumed by the surrounding space, is submerged in the semi-darkness of a bluish-green, grayish, sometime deep blue atmosphere. In this essentially melancholy environment, within which I myself embody the female figure in the image, this additional montage confirms the positive strength of a specific site and a precise temporality.

The image refers to the years in which I witnessed the war between Israel and Palestine (first Intifada 1987-1990 and second Intifada 2001-2004): an invisible war, but one which was intensely experienced on a day to day basis.

Of all the scenes presented to the observer, this last one in particular is informed by an authentic experience of depths, and of the depth of the psyche. The figure is completely immersed, devoured by the universe of a silent macrocosm. It represents complete isolation, the loss of all ties within the matrix of a complex historical situation. It is the short version: filmed, photographed, sketched and simultaneously staged. Yet this “choreography” does not come in the form of a spectacle. Instead, it is intended as a kind of sponge, which soaks everything up. The images relies not on narrative or meaning but on atmosphere. This atmosphere is not intended as a substitute for reality, but refers to that which is beyond reality, a depressing situation bereft both of energy and a sense of history.

The atmospheric features that determine light, space, and color contribute towards the perception of a depressive state of affairs, reflected in the immobility and isolation of my person. The metaphor of depression is omnipresent throughout the image: as a subject, it is obvious without being visible. Senses have been extinguished, the connection to reality sundered, the ability to gather experience has atrophied, the fact of earthly existence has been subjected to a process of regression back into a prehistoric version of the self.

The black, bluish, and greenish gray tones convey a strong feeling of claustrophobia. The walls and wire netting respond to the feeling of imprisonment. In addition, the diminishment of my person, reduced to stillness and passivity, congeals the image into a state of utter outrage and complete quiet. The almost fetal, hunched position and the suspension of time express this depressive state – testament to a paradoxical approach to the world and towards myself on the one hand but also, and this may be something that I fear, a sign of extreme lucidity. Depressiveness is a signal, an expression of opposition. Alone, cut-off from all ties to the past as well as to the future, to society and to sociability, the represented individual is a figure bereft of a topic, or rather, a figure who keeps the topic hermetically encrypted: a mystery. Philippe Pareno reinforces this idea when he compares the artist to “a prisoner, killing time by occupying the dead zones, the fallow zones. He is a discoverer, always in search of challenges, a provocateur.”

These images bespeak an expectation. The calm and the immobility are witnesses to a latent drama and implied horror: everything combines to reinforce an effect of portent, like the shadow of death. Yet its reverberations scarcely touch my person, whose dumb presence, paradoxically, is invulnerable. The feeling of unease, which saturates the spectator, is conveyed through melodrama that derives not from action but from inaction, or to put it another way, from the deactivation of positive elements in the image: the suggestion of movement, the mysterious colors, or the multiplication of perspectives in the various compositions.

I suggest a new approach: The artist does not turn away from life because he no longer believes in existence. On the contrary, his art turns towards life, embracing and celebrating existence by mourning it in an affective, contemporary present. However, artists reject political perspectives and realist approaches in order to fully embody an attitude of denial. Depressiveness does not characterize the artist himself but his position vis-à-vis the world and vis-à-vis art. Seen from this point of view, depression is the expression of an imperious wish. It is the need to respond to contemporary social imperatives such as health, speed, communication, profit, beauty with inertia, psychological emptiness, self-disgust. I would like to add that “Reminiscence” also responds to the injunctions of injustice, war, and the loss of respect for humanity.
